The spring of 2020 has been a time like no other that will be retold to many generations to come. The Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic has become the main focus affecting every dimension of our lives. From attending school or work via Zoom while staying confined to our homes, this virus outbreak has defined a new norm that has quickly been adopted as our new lifestyle in a matter of weeks. Before the current pandemic took hold of our world, many students took school on-campus for granted (visiting our teachers’ classrooms, running into our classmates, and seeing familiar faces on campus). Now that our campus is closed indefinitely, we use our screens as a window to connect with life outside of our homes.

The longer we are isolated, the more we realize that the internet alone can be sufficient in making our life continue just as before – technically we can do almost anything online: order from Amazon, receive our education, and socialize through social media. In a way, if we are to look at our life today versus before the quarantine, many people would probably agree that it has become more efficient.

The name ‘The World @ Your Fingertips’ came after a few days living in quarantine; I realized that everything I need can be achieved through my computer. However, loneliness almost instantaneously hit me.  Although I love spending time with my family, I miss seeing members of our community as well as overhearing banter between others. I have come to realize that efficiency is essential in increasing productivity, but the stay-at-home lifestyle has deprived each one of us from being a part of a greater community. Through the Healing Arts Club’s project – ‘The World @ Your Fingertips: A Community Reflection’ – I hope we can restrengthen Bishop's community. By sharing our thoughts and experiences through writings and pictures, I hope each one of us can find comfort and joy in knowing how our community is continuing to thrive during this unprecedented time.

Warmly,

Ursula Hardianto ‘21
